Manchester United: Erik ten Hag Sacked Over Compounding Woes
Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag, less than 24 hours after the team's demoralizing defeat at the hands of struggling West Ham United, which was a further setback to the team's performance this season.
United suffered contrivance 2-1 defeat against West Ham and were unable to get back on track in winning ways after drawing 1-1 with Fenerbahce in the Europa League. The loss sent United down the EPL standings to 14th, with just seven-point away from the relegation zone.
Earlier, the club management had met over the fate of the Dutch manager with the expectations of hiring either Tomas Tuchel or former England manager, Gareth Southgate. Both individuals turned down the job and Tuchel went on to become the new England men's national team manager.
Further more, the team's winless Europa League campaign, with draws against Twente, Porto, and Fenerbahce, only exacerbated the situation. Erik's tactics and player selections were increasingly questioned, and the once-loyal supporters began to lose faith.
"I appreciate the trust and the moments we shared together," said Erik over his dismissal. "I wish you the best in the future."
There are speculations that former Chelsea manager, Graham Porter is linked to the job. However, in the meantime, the club has announced former United goalscorer, Van Nistelrooy as the interim manager. Until the sacking of Erik, Nistelrooy served under the ousted manager as an assistant manager.
As the interim head coach, his legacy at United legacy, combined with his coaching potential, that possibly can make him an attractive option for the permanent position. Should Nistelrooy succeed as an interim head coach, he may become a strong contender for the permanent role.
