Premier League: Liverpool Maintain Table Summit With Aston Villa Defeat

Liverpool continue to consolidate on their EPL table lead, extending the margin to five-point clear nearest rivals after they neatly defeated Aston Villa at Anfield Stadium.

Just as the Reds, Villa needed the maximum points to return to top four of the standings but since they could make something out of their scoring chance, Liverpool helped themselves to the game. Mohamed Salah sealed the victory in the latter stages from a breakaway that set him up for a one-on-one challenge with Martinez and he dunk the ball over the on rushing Argentine goalkeeper. The goal was just enough to seal the victory for the Reds.

Darwin Nunez had set the Reds on course to victory with the opening goal from the first half, seizing the scoring chance from a loose ball from Salah's fastbreak, he steered a shot past Martinez into a difficult angle. The Uruguayan forward later had another one-on-one encounter with Martinez, but this time, he smacked the ball just wide over the woodwork.

Arsenal and Man City have been dreadful in comparison this period but lots of credits to Arne Slot, the Reds have been nothing short of the best team at the top of the Premier League table . It is really astonishing. Liverpool go five points clear

Aston Villa did have a couple of moments also want a penalty but the VAR ruled that out. The victory extended Sala's goal streak against Villa to eight in all competitions. Since 2022 have remained unbeaten against Villa through five encounters among which there were 3 victories of Liverpool, 2 draws.

Overview

Villa had just the right chances to make a comeback and let them slide. For Liverpool, those would not especially when it is Salah on the breakaway. The Egyptian forward made the game for the Reds at the time they just needed to double the lead.

It was a game with the benefit of extending their lead on the table summit. Villa, however, could have got at least a point of the game, particularly when Torres was not given a penalty for Bradley's challenge. Though, the VAR later dismissed the spot-kick as Bradley got his head first to Digne's cross.
