Sinners Maintains Box Office Top Spot Despite Release of The Accountant 2, Stars Wars' Revenge of the Sith
Sinners maintained its strong presence at the box office for the second week, despite the re-release of Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith, and The Accountant 2, making their debuts. After raking in $45.7 million in ticket sales over the weekend, the Warner Bros. action-horror film extended its domestic gross to $123.1 million.
Presently, the film is the highest-grossing original film directed by Ryan Coogler since Us in 2019. Besides performing well at the theatres, it did impressively well on streaming platforms, particularly on Imax, which has grossed over $30 million since its release.
With its worldwide gross standing at $163.2 million, Sinners has conveniently surpassed its budget of $90 million. It has rightly beaten the projections set for it at the box office, having a gross that dropped marginally by 5% in its second week. It is reportedly one of the lowest second weekend drops at the box office.
The Star Wars re-release also made an obvious stride over the weekend, marginally outperforming The Accountant 2 by less than a million dollars. Revenge of the Sith raked in $25.4 million across 2,800 theatres domestically. Considering its predecessors like the rerelease of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi ($5.1m) in 2023 and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace ($8.7m) in 2024, it has done impressively well in its first weekend.
Amazon MGM's The Accountant 2 occupied the third position on the chart with $24.6 million in domestic gross in its opening weekend. Globally, its grossed $38.5 million as Amazon continues to explore opportunities in theatrical releases despite being a streaming platform.
