Shanghai Masters: Daniil Medvedev Has Something He Is Not Approving Of
Danill Medvedev is contesting a crucial matter that he suspected put him in disadvantage at the ongoing Shanghai Masters in China. He has already progressed to the Last-16 of the tournamnet, yet he blamed the urganizers for a deliberate act to put his counterparts in an undue advantage for the use of what he described as "dead balls" at the tournament.
The one-time champion rallied to defeat Matteo Alnardi in three set, 7-5 6-4 6-4 in the Round of 32. He had the opening set slid out of his control as his opponent broke back in the later stages and won a set-point on a break. The remaining sets witnessed a resurgent from the Russiam and he went on to rout Matteo.
"I think it basically favours people who can vebefit power from dead ball. Some have better quality with this. Some don't," said Medvedev after his match against Matteo.
Medvedev won the Shanghai Masters for the first time in 2019 and that was his second ATP Masters 1000 title after his first in Cincinnati in the same year. He since has extended six ATP Masters 1000 titles to six, with the recent one won last year in Rome.
Unlike him, the fifth seeded player argued that his counterparts stand to benefit from using "dead balls" and can give them an advantage since they can "generate crazy power" using such balls.
He added: "But with these balls, they're the only player who can generate crazy power. It's Jannik and Carlos. It gives them an extra advantage."
Both Jannik and Carlos are through to the Last-16 of the tournament. For the four-time champion, Novak Djokovic who is participating for the first time since 2019, he shrugged off a scare from Alex Michelsen in the opening round to win in straight sets, 7-6(7) 7-6 (11) to progress to Round of 32.
