Shanghai Masters: Daniil Medvedev Beats Alexander Zverev To Lift Second Straight ATP Masters 1000 trophy


Daniil Medvedev has clinched his third title and the second in a row in Shanghai Open, with a thrilling final match victory over German player Alexander Zverev to claim his career straight second ATP Masters 1000 trophy after Cincinnati Masters in the United States.

Zverev was considerably beaten by the Russian in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 that lasted for an hour and 13 minutes for his first victory in five ATP head-to-head series over the 22-year-old.

Daniil was in superlative form by the manner be breezed through the sets over Zeverv, converting four-in-five breakpoints whilst he saved five-in-six breaks faced against the world no. 6 en route the victory. That, in effect, made him the second player after his opponent, Zverev, who are outside the Big Four players to lift straight two ATP Master 1000 trophies in a single season.

"This one is also amazing because I think is one of the most prestigious Masters [1000 trophies] on the Tour. Especially in the past 10 year, there were only three players who managed to win this one," the 23-year-old said.

The Russian has the most final appearances with nine in total this season, trailed by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Roger Federer, and Dominic Thiem, all with 5 appearances.

He added saying in the post-match interview, "Everybody is talking that they need new guys, something new, so I gave them something new. I don't celebrate my wins. I just stay calm, I do my job. Boom, done."

Both Medvedev and Zverev have claimed a spot in the ATP Nitto Finals which will kick off on 10th November at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom.
