Nicolas Jackson Shines as Aston Villa Beat Manchester City
Aston Villa claimed a big win against Manchester City, with Nicolas Jackson scoring a brace to give the hosts a 2-0 victory at Villa Park.
Manchester City had maintained an unbeaten run in the Premier League, winning all their previous games before losing on the road at Villa Park. Villa had been unbeaten by Manchester City after losing back-to-back in the Premier League games last season.
Villa got off to the perfect start in the sixth minute. Marc Guehi gave the ball away under pressure, allowing John McGinn to pick it up and find Jackson in space. The striker made no mistake, getting past his marker before firing into the top left corner to put the hosts 1-0 up.
After the interval, Maresca’s side came out revamped, with Phil Foden and Rico Lewis introduced at half time. In the 52nd minute, City's pressure paid off. After Boubacar Kamara fouled Ndiaye just outside the box, Ndiaye delivered a cross into the area. Erling Haaland rose above the defence and headed past Suzuki, restoring level terms.
Eight minutes later, Villa retook the lead. Mbaye raced down the right and slipped the ball to Jackson. Then the striker finished up, striking a low-cut shot, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma to the goal.
Villa maintained their unbeaten run against Manchester City, winning three consecutive Premier League games. Despite the loss, Manchester City remain on top of the Premier League with equal points to their nearest rivals, Arsenal.
Overview
Manchester City had a great game, but Villa took an early lead. City wanted pace and energetic football while Villa kept the pace slow and the passes short. Jackson was their reliable striker, and he was impactful throughout. He secured the victory for Villa, scoring in both halves.
Chances and Assists
Aston Villa's goalkeeper, Suzuki, deserved credit for the team's performance. He saved two incredible attempts in the first half to keep Villa in the lead. He saved Ryan Cherki's strike inside the penalty area, and in the closing minutes, he saved a goal-bound header from Haaland. However, in the first half, he was beaten by Ndiaye's shot from outside the box, which narrowly missed the goal, clipping the right post.
