Manchester City Win Big Against Liverpool at Anfield
Manchester City secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, with second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki settling a contest that remained goalless at the interval.
After a two-week hiatus following an international break, Manchester City remained formidable, claiming a crucial three points and solidifying their Premier League lead. They have only lost to Arsenal so far this season.
Haaland set City on course and took the lead in the 65th minute. Doku, on the left, dazzled past his opponents and curled a shot that was partially blocked, but the ball ricocheted into the striker’s path. Haaland reacted quickly and drove a powerful finish into the bottom-left corner.
Meanwhile, two minutes after Haaland missed a glaring chance in the 60th minute, Liverpool suffered a major setback. Gravenberch received a second yellow card in the 62nd minute and was sent off after lunging at Doku as the City winger threatened to break forward.
Their resistance lasted only three minutes. In the 68th minute, Doku doubled City’s advantage with an impressive individual finish. Cutting inside from the left, the winger created space before curling a shot into the top right corner, leaving Alisson with little chance.
City added a third goal in the 78th minute, effectively putting the contest beyond Liverpool’s reach. Rayan Cherki received the ball inside the penalty area, used a dummy to evade Frimpong and then cut inside Alisson before slotting it into the net.
Manchester City extend their lead by three ahead of the closest rival, Arsenal. Enzo Maresca led the team to a 5-3 victory over Sunderland before the international break. The victory against Liverpool is their biggest without conceding to an opponent since Maresca took over as head coach in the summer.
Overview
Manchester City had a field day, repeatedly burrowing through the Reds' defense. The first half was tedious and goalless at Anfield, but a 10-man Reds in the second half fell short of resisting their victory. The goals were nothing short of classics, and Allison could not help conceding.
Liverpool were dominated in every form, particularly in the second half. It was not a familiar Liverpool. Manchester City barely had the need to ward off pressure. Meanwhile, they pounced on the Reds' box, exploiting the wings to wreck Liverpool.
Chances and Assists
Manchester City maximised most of their opportunities, particularly in the second half. The only glaring chance missed was when Antonio Semenyo's pass set Haaland up on a one-on-one with Allison, and he missed.
Doku was the standout player in all the build-ups. He was directly involved in the three goals, including his own goal. City introduced Jeremy Doku for Iliman Ndiaye in the 56th minute, adding fresh pace and direction to their attack.
