Saka, Guimaraes Shine As Arsenal Beat Sunderland

 

Bukayo Saka and Bruno Guimaraes led the way as Arsenal defeated Sunderland at home to consolidate their place in the Premier League. 

Arsenal have been unbeaten since winning the Community Shield. As the Premier League defending champions, losing to promoted side Sunderland would dent their quest to defend the title. They dug deep and scored twice after the hosts spun a penalty. 

Moments after David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee's penalty, Arsenal advanced into the hosts' half. Declan slipped a pass to Guimaraes in front of the 18-yard box, and the midfielder curled the ball straight into the top left corner. 

In the closing minutes, Saka was dropped inside the penalty area following a fast break, and a spot-kick was awarded to him after Mandava received a red card. The winger converted the penalty, giving Arsenal a two-goal lead. 

Sunderland had only won one of their previous three Premier League games. They drew their previous against Brentford and defeated Hull City in a third-round EFL Carabao Cup elimination.

David Raya was a standout player for Arsenal. Besides saving a penalty, Sunderland grew offensively, and he saved several goal-bound shots. Mukiele played a significant role for Sunderland. The defender's backheel attempt almost caught Arsenal off guard, but Gabriel reacted quickly to block the ball. 

Saka and Havertz played a crucial role in the victory. Arsenal were more impactful in the second half. Sunderland fought hard to share Spilsby with Arsenal, but they missed their best chance from Enzo's penalty.
