Odegaard Strike Gives Arsenal Champions League Opening-Day Victory

 

Arsenal got off to a perfect start in the UEFA Champions League, defeating Napoli 1-0 in a hard-fought match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. 

Arsenal are the defending Premier League champions and were finalists in the last edition of the UEFA Champions League, but lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the final. The opening day was difficult until the second half, when Martin Odegaard struck the winner. 

Odegaard set Arsenal ahead when Christos Tzolis found him around the edge of the penalty area. The Arsenal captain allowed the ball to roll across his body before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that hit the inside of the left post and flew into the net.

Earlier, the Gunners created their first major opportunity in the 13th minute, when Bukayo Saka connected with an outside-of-the-boot cross from Viktor Gyokeres. Saka attempted an acrobatic finish, but goalkeeper Alex Meret was equal to it.

Arsenal maintain opening-day game victory across all competitions. They have remained unbeaten since defeating Manchester City to win the Community Shield. 

Overview

It was a tough game for Arsenal to earn maximum points. Napoli were resilient from the first half and pressed the Gunners deep into their own half. Napoli's Kevin de Bruyne was influential, but he could not create a goal-scoring chance for Rasmus Holjund.  

Arsenal have found a player in Tzolis. He replaced Eberechi Eze on the left wing and made his presence felt in the second half. Arteta's decision to overhaul the frontline in the second half paid off, and Odegaard produced the winning goal.

Chances and Assists 

One of the best chances of the game was wasted by Madueke/ The winger struck a one-on-one chance into Metret's parry, and also saved the rebound effort from Christos Tzolis. 

Another great moment was when De Bruyne found space inside the Arsenal penalty area and appeared caught between shooting and crossing. He eventually sent the ball across goal, but none of his teammates could get a touch.
