Maitland Niles Breaks Man. United's Resolve With Stoppage-Time Equaliser

Everton snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester United, with substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles firing a stunning right-footed strike into the top left corner deep into stoppage time, denying United what would have been a precious away victory.

Few fixtures in English football carry the history and intensity of Everton against Manchester United: the two sides have shared some of the Premier League era’s most memorable moments at Goodison Park. This encounter added another unforgettable chapter, with a game that seemed settled twice, only for Everton to drag themselves level on both occasions with the kind of resilience that defines them on home soil.

United released it almost immediately after the restart. Just one minute into the second half, Kobbie Mainoo picked the ball up in midfield and threaded a precise through pass into the left channel for Bryan Mbeumo. The winger checked his run, darted past three opponents and drilled a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, no chance for the goalkeeper. 

In the 83rd minute, Hayden Hackney drifted down the right and whipped a cross into the box. Tyrique George, arriving with perfect timing on the right side of the box, met it with a crisp right-footed finish into the top right corner. United reclaimed the lead when Luke Shaw delivered a pinpoint cross from the left flank into the centre of the box. Sesko, all strength and timing, rose above his marker and powered his header into the bottom left corner. 

As the game advanced to injury time, Goodison refused to accept defeat. Maitland-Niles, who replaced James Garner in the 77th minute, picked up the ball thirty yards from goal. He took one look up and drove a shot from outside the box that screamed into the top left corner.

Manchester have only won one of their first three Premier League games since the season commenced. Likewise, Everton won their open-day fixture and drew the previous two Premier League games. 

Overview 

Just as the first half was shared between both teams, the second half was the same. Though United had the earliest attempt on target, they barely came close afterwards. Everton's defense was firm, keeping United away from dangerous areas until they broke through twice. It was clear that Everton would level up as they kept pressuring United, who were fatigued in the closing stages. 

Jack Grealish brought vigour to the team when he replaced Brennan Johnson, and Tyrique Johnson was a standout, influencing the right wing. He almost doubled his goal tally but forced a save instead. United's performance was impressive. Everton were just unrelenting. 

Chances and Assists 

Fernandes missed a chance in the eighth minute when his volley clipped the frame of the goal.  Everton came close with a flicker from Armstrom that forced a save from Lammens before George equalised. Fernandes had the most impact on the game, giving goal-scoring assists. He was directly involved in the buildup to Sesko's goal.
