Erling Haaland Leads Manchester City To UCL Opening-Day Victory

 

Erling Haaland kicked off the new UEFA Champions League season with a brace as Manchester City defeated FC Porto 2-0 in the opening game. 

Porto have not participated in the UEFA Champions League since the 2023/24 season, when they were knocked out on penalties in the Round of 16. Manchester City returned to the competition, with Haaland becoming the first player to score more than one goal for the team in a single match this season. 

After a goalless half, Haaland put Manchester City ahead with a header following a cross from Enzo Fernandes and doubled the lead in stoppage time, sidefooting Ait-Nouri's cutback into the left corner. 

With a brace, Haaland extended his goal tally (36) for Manchester City, equalling the previous record set by Sergio Aguero for all-time leading scorer. Enzo Maresca remains unbeaten in charge as Manchester City manager since the season commenced. 

Overview 

Porto's goalkeeper was a great influence on the team, stopping multiple goals that should have set Manchester City apart. Fairly, the Premier League side had fair chances inside the penalty area and dominated the half. 

Porto's Diogo Costa was prominent throughout. His goalkeeping qualities kept Porto through the goalless first half. Manchester City would have won by a wider margin if not for his goalkeeping prowess. Phil Foden was prominent for Manchester City. The winger lost too many chances that should have long settled the game. 

Chances and Assists

Foden missed a great chance to put the side ahead, sliding to for a shot that landed in the keeper's parry. Another moment came when both Foden and Haaland shot at goal inside the penalty area;  Costa stopped the attempts.
