AC Milan Lost UEL Opener To Benfica

 

Benfica kicked off their UEFA Europa League campaign on a clean sheet, defeating AC Milan 2-0 in the opening game at San Siro. 

Former Manchester United manager Amorim Ruben led the Portuguese side to a stellar performance. They secured a place in the competition, winning their two-legged playoffs against AGF. They have been unbeaten in all games since the start of the season. 

Dodi Lukebajio set the side ahead, curling an 18-yard shot into the right corner. The lead doubled midway through the second half when Jakub Kaminski volleyed in Souffian El Karouani's cross. 

The three-time Europa League finalists (1983, 2013, and 2014) extended their unbeaten run to five consecutive games. Meanwhile, AC Milan lost their previous two Serie A games, extending their winless run to three across all competitions. 

Overview 

Benfica played incredibly well for the first quarter. They curbed Milan's pace and cross-pitch lob to dominate. Lukebakio playing on the right enhanced their attacking prowess. He was a standout player for most of the half. 

Milan returned from halftime to press deep into Benfica's half. And met a brick wall of defense. The Portuguese were a little watchful but kept control of the midfield and capitalised on fast breaks. Trubin also made some incredible saves to help keep the side's clean sheet.

Chances and Assists

Lukebakio was sought after as a player making runs, barreling through the right and giving assists. He slipped a through ball for Kaminski, who struck it over the crossbar.
