Former Super Eagles Manager Speaks Out On Olympic Victory, Medal, Unfulfilled Promises

 

Former Super Eagles manager, Johannes "Bonfrere" Joe has spoken out on his achievement at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA, and what later transpired, despite leading the Under 23 to a successful outing at the Games.

Bonfrere Joe, as popularly called, led the Dream Team to win its first ever Olympic gold medal at the Atlanta '96. The medal followed Chioma Ajunwa's in Long Junp at the Games. Ever since, Nigeria has never won a medal in those categories.

Speaking to a Nigerian media outlet, Punch, Bonfrere Joe revealed he has not been recognized for his contributions. Though they were promised to be rewarded, others have received gift as promised except him. He remained recognised for the triumph. 

."They were claiming that everyone has received their rewards, but I have not received anything," said Bonfrere, recalling his experience. 

In retrospect, Kanu Nwankwo captained the team to the Games and assisted with goals scored by Celestine Babayaro and Daniel Amokachi in the final against Argentina. The Dream Team won 3-2 in a comeback, receiving ing the historic gold medal. 

Bonfrere added:"Even the gold medal was stolen from me, and I still didn't get a reward from the government, which all the players have received, including players who were not on the list."

Kanu scored a brace in the semifinal against Brazil, making him a highly sought-after the Games.  In 1995, he led Ajax to win the UEFA Champions League. He later joined Arsenal where he won the Premier League twice. 

Nigeria won six Olympic medal at the Games; two Gold, one Silver, and three Bronze. The country is the first African country to win an Olympic gold medal in football. The closest Nigeria reached to wi the top prize again was finishing second for a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
