Chelsea Hold Off Brighton's Comeback To Win At Stamford Bridge

 

Chelsea held off an impending resurgence from Brighton and Hove, claiming a 4-3 victory to maintain their winning streak back-to-back in the Premier League new season. 

The Blues won their opening game against Fulham and thrashed Port Vale 7-0 in the EFL Carabao Cup opening-day game. Until today, Brighton had won back-to-back games, both in the Premier League opening-day game and in the League Cup. 

Romeo Lavia gave Chelsea the head start in the fourth minute, and within half an hour, they had gone three goals clear. The defender tapped home a flick from Joao Pedro, and Pedro Neto doubled the lead side-footing Rogers's pass into the net. 

Neto drifted down the right and slipped the ball to Pedro, who struck in the third. Brighton pulled one goal back before halftime, as Yalcouye finished off a counter after a one-two ball with Diego Gomez. 

The Seagulls scored a second when Pascal Grob's shot ricocheted off Pedro and into the net. Cole Palmer extended the Blues' lead with an individual effort, dazzling past three defenders before he nestled the ball in the net.

Yalcouye scored in his Premier League debut for Brighton. He had spent his past two seasons on loan after joining the Seagulls in 2024. Xabi Alonso extended his unbeaten run with Chelsea to three consecutive games across all competitions.

Overview 

It was a tough game for Chelsea as Brighton stood their ground throughout. Pedro greatly influenced the game and was a big deal for the Seagulls to handle. The Blues narrowly claimed the victory against their relentless opponents. 

For most of the first half, Chelsea had the upper hand, providing Pedro with the ball and threatening Brighton's defense. The Seagulls' passes were tidy and moved effectively through the centre, but burrowing through the wing proved more effective. Yalcouye was a standout for the Seagulls for most of the first half. 

Assists and missed chances 

Pedro wasted a glaring opportunity, following a cutback from Neto moments before scoring Chelsea's third. Yalcouye missed getting a proper touch on Gomez's cross for a tap-in and forced a save from Martinez. 

Pedro and Neto were directly involved in three goals, including their own. They were both influential on the frontline. Yalcouye was a standout for Brighton, creating the most assists and directly involving himself in two goals.
