Bruno Fernándes' Hat-trick Leads Man. United's Comeback To Beat Ipswich Town

 

Manchester United won their first game of the season, beating Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernández scoring a hat-trick on matchday 2. 

Ipswich had won back-to-back games before losing to United. They defeated Sunderland in the season-opening day game and eliminated Leicester City from the EFL Carabao Cup, winning 3-1. They set the pace at Old Trafford, taking the lead before the hosts came from behind to win. 

Leif Davis opened the scoresheet with an amazing strike inside the penalty area. He was left unmarked when Fatawu's cross reached him. In one touch, he struck the ball into the top of the post. 

United's comeback began when they scored the equaliser in the 40th minute. Mathew's Cunha's fast break set Fernando's loose in the box, and he struck the ball into the top of the post. 

Soon after halftime, the hosts took the lead when Jacob Greaves deflected in Harry Maguire's shot. Fernandes doubled his tally, scoring from a penalty before completing a hat-trick, tapping home Mbeumo's pass that ricocheted off Greaves. 

Near the closing minutes, Mbeumo netted the fifth, lobbing the ball over Scherpen, who had drifted far out. Ipswich scored their second goal in injury time from Akpom's tap-in.

Meanwhile, in their previous Premier League game, Manchester lost the opening-day game against Hull City by 2-0. In the previous season, they were unbeaten in the five consecutive closing games. 

Overview

Manchester United shrugged off an early scare from the promoted side, Ipswich. The visitors were impressive midway through the first half before United were awakened. 

The downpour midway through the second half was inconsequential for Manchester United, dominating to secure the victory. Ipswich were not as versatile as they were in the first half. 

Missed Chances and Assists

Ipswich had the first chance to score despite the loss. Enciso broke loose on a counter, latched onto the box, but was stopped by Lammens. Manchester United's closest chance came when Mbeumo's tap-in of Marcus Rashford's cross inside the six-yard box clipped the top of the frame. 

Besides scoring the winning goal, Mbeumo was involved in a handful of chances created, including Marcus Rashford's missed chance that Scherpen saved.
