Arsenal Are Winners of Community Shield
Arsenal are the Community Shield winners for the first time in three seasons, after defeating Manchester City 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
The Gunners won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years this season, setting them up against the FA Cup winners, Manchester City. They last won the silverware in 2023, defeating Liverpool 5-4 on penalties.
They scored all three goals within the first 50 minutes. The early opening goal from Riccardo Calafiori had shattered City's resolve from the get-go. The defender found space to strike inside the penalty area and beat Donnarumma to the right corner.
Kai Havertz doubled the lead, nodding home a header pass from Christos Tzolis in the 28th minute. After the halftime break, they sealed the victory when Tzolis' through pass set Martin Odegaard off for a strike inside the penalty. He shouldered the goalkeeper and struck the ball into the right corner.
Arsenal have now lifted the silverware for the fifth time, and three of those are under Mikel Arteta (2020, 2024, and 2026). Despite the loss, Manchester City have won the Community Shield seven times, and their last was in 2024 under former manager Pep Guardiola..
Overview
It was an incredible performance from Arsenal. Manchester City's defense was shoddy for the best part of the first half, and Arsenal punished them. They carefully devastated Manchester City's defense, with Odegaard's goal being the most thrilling finish.
The Gunners absorbed Manchester City's pressure and converted the chances into goals. Antobio Semenyo was the standout player for City and appeared to be a good combination with Mateo Kovacic. He was the playmaker, keeping the pressure on Arsenal. Unfortunately, they were unable to score but forced brilliant saves from David Raya.
