World Cup 2026: Canada, Bosnia Share Points In Opening Match Clash
Canada and Bosnia/Herzegovina started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a perfect note as both sides shared spoils in a 1-1 draw in the opening game of Group B.
Bosnia's lead from the first was leveled midway through the semi-half. Cyle Larin's equaliser was Canada's first goal ever in a FIFA World Cup event. They have been unable to score in the competition since they first qualified for the Games in 1986.
Jovo Lukic opened the scoresheet in the first half in a set piece. Following a corner, Kolasinac's flicker reached Lukic for a header into the net, giving Bosnia the lead in the 21st minute. They held the lead until the 78th minute after Larin replaced Tani Oluwaseyi.
Canada broke the status quo when Jonathan David's pass broke through the centre defence, connecting Larin, who, despite a challenge from two defenders, slotted a shot through to beat Nikola Vasilj.
For the first time in Canadian football history, they started the Group stage of the FIFA World Cup atop the table with one point, and Bosnia followed in second place with a point. In their next match, they will face Qatar, and Bosnia will face Switzerland.
Overview
Bosnia has good attacking football. They are swift to get on the counter, which the Canadian side has been able to tame, except for the set piece that produced the opening goal from Jovo Lucik. Canada had the better of the possession for the best part of the first half,
Canada maintained their grip on possession for most of the second half and had chances to score, but Bosnia maintained its resolute defense, blocking all chances to equalise. Oluwaseyi was the standout player for Canada andhe really put Bosnia's defense to work. Canada's gamble to bolster the frontline with Larin paid off. The striker scored within two minutes and was a standout for the rest of the game.
Chances and Assists
Canada's best chances to equal the scores came through Oluwaseyi in the second half. The first time, his shot was blocked on the touchline by Kolasinac, and the second time, his glance header was clear on the touchline by Muharemovic.
Demiravic also had a chance on the counter to double the lead for Bosnia, but was stopped in the box by the goalkeeper. Besides scoring the equaliser, Larin also had a chance to score the winner in injury time, but two Bosnian defenders blocked his attempt in front of the post.
