FIFA 2026: US Beat Australia To Secire Group Top Spot

The United States has secured a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, after defeating Australia 2-0 in Seattle to top Group D.

The Americans won their previous game against Paraguay, making it their first back-to-back victory in the FIFA World Cup since 1930. They secured the first goals of both games from own goals, which made them the first teams to benefit from such instances back-to-back in this tournament.

Australia dropped behind when Cameron Burgess deflected a cross into the net in the 11th minute. The lead doubled from Alex Freeman's header inside the penalty area. Initially, the goal was ruled out before it was reviewed and given.

Despite losing, Australia are still second behind the United States, having won their previous match against Turkiye. They would face Paraguay in the next group match, while the United States will take on Turkiye.

Overview

The US dominated the match by a fair margin from start to finish. Australia were forced to the back foot, and later they became aggressive. There was little Australia could make of the match as the Americans enjoyed possession for the most part.

Chances and defense

Australia conceded the opening goal from a defensive flop. Burgess miscalculated his step, dashing into a cutback cross. Meanwhile, Popi was onside, also in position to tap in the ball. The second goal also came off a defensive flop as Freeman was kept onside, allowing him to get a rebound goal.
