FIFA 2026: Switzerland Beat Canada As Both Sides Secure Spots In Round of 16

Switzerland have qualified for the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after defeating Canada 2-1 in the last group game in Vancouver, finishing atop Group B with seven points

The host nation, Canada, also qualified for the knockout stages, despite losing to Switzerland. They finished the group stage with four points. Though they had the same points as Bosnia, they outperformed their counterparts in goal difference.

Ruben Vargas and Jhnah Manzambi made their marks on the game, ending the deadlock soon after halftime. Vargas finished off Manzambi's cross from the right wing barely a minute into the second half. Manzambi doubled the lead midway through the second half following a fast break from Breel Embolo, who set him up with the ball to blast into the net.

Promise David made his mark on his first touch after replacing Tajon Buchanan. Canada broke through the Swiss midfield as Nathan Saliba gained control of an aerial ball inside the penalty area. He lobbed the ball across the penalty area for Promise, who tapped the ball into the net.

Switzerland will progress to the Round of 16  as they bid to make their first quarter-final appearance in the FIFA World Cup since 1954. Canada will join them in the second round of the FIFA World Cup.

Overview

Vargas and Manzambi remained two reliable attackers for the Swizz. They lived up to their performance in the opening game, scoring the goals that decided the game. Jesse Marsch's gamble with Promise David paid off. The substitution made by the Canadian manager revamped the side for the best part of the closing minutes.

Defensive flaws cost the Canadian side the goals from Switzerland. The Swiss attackers were poorly marked on both occasions. Their effort to make a comeback by bolstering the front line was late. However, the loss did not cost them a spot in the knockout stages.

Chances and Defense

Switzerland's second scoring opportunity was their clearest. Embolo was poorly challenged for the aerial ball, leaving the Canadian defense vulnerable as Embolo set sail towards the box before slipping a pass to Manzanbi for the finish.

Occasionally, the Canadian side looked dangerous, but they were stopped by the likes of Akanji and Nico Elvedi. However, Canada could not have had a better scoring opportunity. Saliba's control of the aerial ball into the box neatly opened the Swiss defense as Rodriguez and Widmer drifted wide, allowing Promise to finish.
