FIFA 2026: South Africa Avoid Elimination, Draw Against Czechia In Second Match

South Africa narrowly avoided early elimination after a 1-1 draw against Czechia in the second match of the FIFA World Cup in Atalanta, United States.

Both have just scored their first goals and earned their first points in this competition. South Africa had to come from behind to level the scores, and that came later in the game in the crowded stadium with Liberian legend and former President George Weah in attendance.

The Czechias took the lead in the sixth minute with a brilliant finish from Michal Sadilek. Hlozek's cut back drifted across the box to Sojka, who passed it to Michal to smash into the net. South Africa levelled the scores in the latter stages when Teboho Mokoena scored from a penalty.

South Africa held off a defeat in their first game against Czechia in the FIFA World Cup. The Bafana Bafana will face South Korea in the next match, while Czechia will meet Mexico.

Overview

The game quickly got off to an energetic start after Michal's opening goal. The Bafana Bafana had the pace but were stopped by the Czechias' defence from getting into dangerous areas. While South Africa were offensive, the Czechs maintained composure, with the left-back, the Bafana Bafana side was determined to exploit.

Coming up against more Czech defenders than they had to attack in the box was one big challenge, breaking through their opponents' wall. Meanwhile, the Czechs were quicker on the overlap when going for the offensive in the second half. Czech was poised to win until they committed a handball offence in the box.

Chances and Defense

Czechia's best chance of the first half led to the opening goal. South Africa found it challenging to play into the Czechias' box as their opponents locked in man-for-man in the midfield. South Africa's finest chance of the half came in its closing minutes from Mokoena's goal attempt, and their only shot on target.

Hiozek made the Czechias' aggression felt soon after half, setting up with Danda for a strike inside the box. South Africa lived up to the challenge, double-blocking the attacker's attempt.
