FIFA 2026: Netherlands Claim Big Win Against Sweden In Second Group Game
The Netherlands dealt Sweden a huge defeat, winning 5-1 in the second of the FIFA World Cup game between the two sides, as Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored braces in Houston, Texas.
Sweden came into the game with high expectations, having won their opening match against Tunisia. The Dutch, however, drew against Japan. The tone of the match changed quickly after Brian Brobbey opened the scoresheet, forcing the Swedes on the back foot.
Brobbey scored the opening goal, latching onto Cody Gakpo's cross, and he doubled the lead before the 20th minute, tapping home Denzel Dumfries' cross from the right. The Swedes were unlucky to have Ayari's goal ruled out, but they yet returned from halftime to concede more goals.
Dumfries darted down the right and squared a cross into the six-yard box for Gakpo to tap in. The striker doubled his tally with an individual effort, drilling a right-footed shot home from inside the penalty area.
Elanga gave the Swedes a lifeline for a comeback, scoring the side's only goal before the Dutch extended their tally through Summervil, who struck an 18-yard shot into the top of the post.
The Netherlands now lead Group F with four points, with Sweden following in second place with three points. The Dutch will face Tunisia in the next match, and Sweden will take on Japan.
Overview
Sweden slowly came into the game after dropping behind by two goals. The Netherlands have the pace, and used it to their advantage before Sweden slowed the pace, allowing Isak and Gykeres to find space to challenge the Dutch defense.
Gyokeres and Ayari were standouts for Sweden in the last 20 minutes of the first half. They were able to crack the Dutch defense, forcing Verbruggen to make saves. The exploited long-range shots, and Elanga was prominent for the best part of the second. Unfortunately, the Dutch side was just the better side
Chances and Defense
The Dutch side has the advantage of Virgil van Dijk in defense and Cody Gakpo in the front. They have been able to tame Sweden from capitalising on Isak and Gyokeres, while Gakpo and Gravenberch channeled down the flanks to power up the attack.
The early stages of the first half were in the Dutch's control, and Brobbey made the most of the two opportunities he had. He facilitated the second goal, but the first came from Gakpo's cross. Gyokeres made his presence felt twice with goal-bound attempts, and Ayari's strike from a set piece was canceled for offside.
Coming off the bench, Elanga made his presence felt, and it was the Swede's best counter. Shortly after, he assisted with an opportunity for Isak that could have doubled the goals. The closing minutes saw the Swedes open up in the midfield, allowing Depay's pass to set Summervile off for a break in.
