FIFA 2026: England, Ghana Share Points In Second Group Game

England maintained the top spot of Group L after sharing points with Ghana in a hard-fought goalless match at the FIFA World Cup in Boston.

The Three Lions followed the trend of the last FIFA World Cup edition in Qatar, where they did not win the first two matches before qualifying by defeating Wales in the last group game. They won the opening match against Croatia, putting them in an advantageous position of leading the group.

Ghana put their feet on the ground defensively, have Antonio Semenyo and Jordan Ayew to barrel down the wings, troubling the England defense. Compared to England, Ghana were more defensive, which enabled them to keep the ball out of danger.

England lead Group L with four points, followed by Ghana in second place with four points. England will face Panama in the next match, while Ghana will take on Croatia.

Overview

Ghana desperately needed a point from the game and would not mind defending to the end. Losing would mean the last group game would be their last hope of staying in the tournament. Meanwhile, England wanted the maximum points to guarantee their place in the knockout stages.

The game was largely dominated by England in terms of possession. Ghana barely had a shot on target while the Three Lions had multiple goal-bound shots intercepted by the Black Stars. It was a technical game of great importance to both sides.

Chances and Defense

Ghana committed more to marking England than exploring attacking options. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were closely marked. England tried long-range shots to break the blockade, but the Ghanaian goalkeeper maintained a firm position.

Reece James saved the day and intercepted Kwabena Adu on a fast break that could have set the Three Lions back. The striker stole the ball off Djed Spence and made off for a counter before James ran into him. The ball ricocheted to Smemnyo, who missed tapping the ball in from close range.

England's best chance in the closing minutes bounced off the frame when O'Reilly's goal-bound header from Bukayo Saka's cross missed the goal post. Harry Kane reacted quickly to the rebound but struck the ball wide. Another similar moment was Marc Guehi's goal-bound header that was blocked on the goal line by Kojo Peprah Oppong.
