FIFA 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History As Portugal Thrash UZbekistan
Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal to claim their first victory of the group stage, scoring twice as they defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in the second group game of the FIFA World Cup in Houston, Texas.
Portugal drew their opening game against FIFA World Cup debutants, DR Congo. They needed to win their second game to move to the top of the table, and they took the lead early in the game. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan lost their opener and are fighting to stay in the tournament, and losing would mean they are technically eliminated.
Ronaldo struck home the opening goal, smashing Joao Cancelo's cross into the top corner on first touch. Nuno Mendes made it two from a free-kick on the edge of the box. The Portuguese finished the first half with a third from Ronaldo. Bruno Fernandes slipped the ball down to the striker, who drifted into a difficult angle in the box before side-footing the ball into the right corner.
The margin widened after halftime as the Uzbekistan goalkeeper, Abduvohid Nematov, deflected Joao Felix's goal-bound shot into the net. Rafael Leao sealed the victory with the winning goal, steering a cross from Nelson Semedo into the top corner.
Ronaldo finished the match, making a historic mark as the first player to score in six separate FIFA World Cups. Portugal now lead Group K with four points, and they will face Colombia in the next match. Uzbekistan will take on DR Congo in the next match.
Overview
Portugal left no chance to Uzbekistan. Taking the lead early in the match was helpful to the Portuguese. They displayed plausible set pieces that almost punished their opponents. Uzbekistan maintained composure regardless of the deficit, and their lifeline of a comeback was ruled out for a foul.
Ronaldo remained an important figure to Portugal, and likewise, Bruno Fernandes for his role in the attacking midfield. Cancelo was another standout player on the defense. Occasionally, Uzbekistan proved difficult, but missed out on scoring a goal for the effort.
Chances and Defense
Cristiano Ronaldo made his mark on the game with plenty of chances. Amongst his near misses was the blocked shot from a free-kick, followed by his goal attempt, when he challenged Uzbekistan's goalkeeper for a clearance. He struck the ball straight into the hands of Nematov.
Uzbekistan's best moment came from Aziz Ganiev's long-range shot. They took advantage of Cancelo tripping on Abbosbek Fayzullaev's tackle in front of the 18-yard box.
