FIFA 2026: Belgium, Iran Game Ends In Stalemate

Belgium have secured another point from a goalless draw against Iran in the second group game of the FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles, California.

As for Iran, the result was impressive, making it the country's first back-to-back unbeaten run in the FIFA World Cup. In the last edition of the tournament, they were knocked out by the United States after losing their opening game to England.

Belgium are having a slow start to the tournament. They drew their opening game against Egypt and suffered a setback when Nathan Ngoy was sent off for his challenge on Mehdi Taremi. The striker stole the ball from the defender, whose backpass set him off for a counter, but he was intercepted. Being the last man, Ngoy was red-carded for his tackle.

Iran now lead Group G with two points, followed by Belgium in second place with two points. The Belgians will take on New Zealand in the next match, while Iran will face Egypt.

Overview

Belgium's domination did not culminate in goals because the Iranians were resolute. Though the team occasionally tried long-range shots, they still could not break even, as Beiranvand maintained a firm position in the post.

Kevin de Bruyne has been a standout for the Belgians. He is instrumental to the attack, providing assists that troubled the Iranians' defense. Losing Nathan Ngoy to a red card offense was a setback for the Belgians. Iran gained the courage to move out and play up the pitch. However, Belgians had the pace to make up for Ngoy's exit and barely felt the deficit.

Chances and Defense

Iran maintained a good composure in defense, and the goalkeeper played a prominent role in keeping the tally even for the most part. The Belgian came closest to taking the lead from Kevin de Bruyne's assist inside the six-yard box, but Beiranvand saved the goal-bound shot from Maxim de Cuyper. Lukebakio's long-range shot was another moment of brilliant save from Beiranvand.

Belgium had the best chances despite losing Ngoy, as Lukebakio's cross rightly landed in the penalty area for Maxim de Cuyper's second strike. It was another close shave moment to take the lead.
