FIFA 2016: Canada To Make Historic Knockout Appearance After Eliminating South Africa
Canada have secured their spot in the Round of 16, defeating South Africa 1-0 with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a stoppage-time goal that qualified the side for the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles.
South Africa qualified for the Round of 32 as the second runner-up of Group A in their fourth FIFA World Cup appearance, and they have never gone past the knockout stages. The co-host nation, Canada, had never reached the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup until now.
Eustaquio scored the winner that took Canada to the next round and the country's first-ever knockout goal in the FIFA World Cup. South Africa's Okon headed clear a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg, and the ball landed on Eustaquio's path. The attacker wasted no time, striking the ball on first touch, from 25 yards into the right corner.
Until now, Canada have never reached the World Cup knockout stages or the Round of 16. Eustaquio became the first player ever to lead the country to the stage. They are the first team to secure a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Overview
It was an intriguing match, and Canada deserved to win. They had shown themselves to be on the better side for most of the game, forcing South Africa into defensive mode. The goal was to be the best scoring moment for Canada. Rather, exploiting a long-range attempt that eventually cracked the Bafan Bafan resolve.
Tani Oluwasey and Jonathan Davies were the standouts for Canada. They used the set piece to their advantage to trouble the Bafana Bafana side. They had near misses that should have long settled the match long before the stoppage time.
Chances and defense
Oluwaseyi's goal-bound effort, stopped by Mbokazi while Davies was near for a tap-in in front of an empty box, following a corner, was Canada's best scoring chance in the first half. South Africa came closest to scoring when Appollis struck in the second half, but the ball drifted in flight and missed the top corner.
Earlier in the first, the Canadians were close to taking the lead from Bombito's header, which was stopped on the goalline by Modiba. Canada came closest again to scoring in the second half in a fast break when Sigur slipped a pass to Buchanan inside the penalty area, but was blocked from tapping the ball into the net by the goalkeeper and Modiba.
