Kobbie Mainoo Seals Late Victory For Manchester United Against Liverpool At Old Trafford

Kobbie Mainoo picked the perfect moment to announce himself again on the biggest stage, rifling home a 77th-minute winner, handing Manchester United a breathless 3-2 victory over Liverpool in a north-west derby

Ahead of the game, Liverpool needed a win to secure their position in the Premier League top four, which would guarantee their ticket to the UEFA Champions League. Earlier in the season, they lost their previous clash with Manchester United by 1-2 at Anfield. On their return leg to Old Trafford, they desperately needed to win, and unfortunately, Mohamed Salah will not be making the starting lineup.

Manchester United took the lead from Matheus Cunha's early goal. The striker latched onto a loose ball following a corner, steering a left-footed shot through bodies and into the bottom right corner. The lead was doubled when Benjamin Sesko reacted quickest in a crowded six-yard box, his initial effort saved by Freddie Woodman, and he shot home the rebound from close range.

Liverpool returned from the halftime break to make a stunning comeback. Dominik Szoboszlai raced onto the ball following a fast break and slotted a left-footed shot into the right corner. The scores were leveled soon after. Szoboszlai seized a build-up, sliding a pass through for Cody Gakpo to finish for the Reds' second goal.

The game balanced on a cutting-edge skill, displayed by Kobbie Mainoo in the 77th minute. One touch to set himself, then a whip of the right boot. The shot flew low, hard, and true into the bottom left corner,

Manchester United consolidated their position in third with 64 points, securing their qualification for the UEFA Champions League. The victory extended Manchester United's unbeaten run to six consecutive Premier League games.

Overview

Liverpool were stunned, disjointed, and chasing shadows. Florian Wirtz’s handball in the first five minutes summed up their early sloppiness, and while Cody Gakpo and Wirtz both went close, Wirtz curling inches wide on 28 minutes as United looked sharper, hungrier, more cohesive. Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo were running the wings, Casemiro was snapping into tackles, and Liverpool’s midfield was overrun.

Harry Maguire did incredibly well alongside Dalot. Despite the Reds' comeback, the team remained compact. Another factor to their performance was Lammens' goalkeeping. However, the defense was formidable enough to keep the ball out of the Reds' scoring range.

Team Efficiency

It was a great game for both sides, even though Liverpool trailed for most of the first half. United were in a great attitude towards the game. Every inch of the team was effective, from the defence to the attacking forward. Luke Shaw and Heaven kept a close mark on Frimpong and Szoboszlai on the left wing while Maguire and Dalot closed the access through the centre. Casemiro and Mainoo maintain the strong hold of the midfield, allowing Bruno Fernandes to move the ball around. The first half was Manchester's.

Liverpool's comeback in the second half was prompt and timely. Gakpo and Szoboszlai eventually got past United's defense. Mainoo canceled the Red's comeback. The midfielder had been a resistance through the centre for much of the time. However, he maintained composure, taking the 25-yard shot that decided the game.

Chances and Assists

Fernandez wasted a great chance to make it a third midway through the first half. Mbeumo enjoyed a lot of space and pace on the right. Cunha and Sesko's goal was their most spectacular moment. Afterwards, the Reds kept a close tab.

Casemiro missed a glancing header on Fernandez's free kick that could have made it a fourth. He had the six-yard to himself against Allison but headed the ball into the centre into the goalkeeper's reach. Szoboszlai played a significant role in Liverpool's performance. Besides his goal, his assist with the second goal was timely and precise.
