Jannik Sinner Eliminated From French Open After Battling Injury
Jannik Sinner's beaten run has ended abruptly in the Italian Open second round following a five-set, 6-3. 6-2. 5-7,6-1, 6-1 loss to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
The world number one had just won his Golden Masters at the just-concluded Italian Open, where he won his ninth Masters title. He had been unbeaten since the Indian Wells Masters event in March, which extended his match-winning streak to 30 after winning the opening round in Roland Garros on Tuesday.
To the dismay of the crowd, Cerundolo overturned the decider to set up a rally that ended Jannik's match unbeaten run. Jannik was in the lead by 2-5 in the third and needed a match four match points to seal the victory before the Argentine won five straight sets.
"It was warm, but not crazy warm," Jannil recalled. "I feel like it was quite okay to play, and really, it was nothing against the heat, nothing against the weather. It was just me today, but it happens."
However, Jannik took a medical break due to a hip injury in the seventh game of the set. Apparently, he did not recover from the pain sustained, which led to his defeat. In the last edition of this event, he was eliminated in the final by Carlos Alcaraz, who had defeated him in the final of the preceding event in Rome.
Jannik remains without a trophy in Roland Garros, despite having won four Grand Slams in his career. Cerundolo will now face Martin Landaluce.
