Italian Open: Jannik Sinner Sets New MAsters 1000 Record, Beats Andrey Rublev
Jannik Sinner has reached a new milestone in his career, upsetting the previous record set by Novak Djokovic in the Masters 1000 after defeating Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.
Rublev was beaten in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, despite Jannik's fitness struggle. The victory was his 32nd in the Maasters 1000 event, beating the previous record set by Djokovic (31). As the Italian player advanced towards the final, he is set to clinch his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title and his fifth since Indian Wells.
"It's normal that one day in the tournament you are slightly tired," Jannik reflected. "I played a lot also, it has been very long day for me."
Jannik reached the final of the last edition, losing to Carlos Alcaraz, in his maiden final appearance. The latter had pulled out of this edition due to a wrist injury, ruling out the anticipation of the player meeting in the final.
The semifinal match is now set between Daniil Medvedev and Jannik. The pair will meet again since their final showdown at the Indian Wells Masters, which the Italian won. Jannik had won all three Masters 1000 clashes with the Russian: the 2024 Miami Open, the 2024 Shanghai Masters, and the 2026 Indian Wells Masters.
