Gravenberch Stunner Cancelled Out as Liverpool and Chelsea Share Spoils in Anfield

Liverpool and Chelsea played out a pulsating 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Ryan Gravenberch’s 6th-minute rocket cancelled out by Enzo Fernandez’s 35th-minute free kick in a game that swung on VAR decisions, late cards, and near misses.

Anfield erupted early as Liverpool struck with their first real sight of goal. Rio Ngumoha’s clever short free kick found Gravenberch unmarked 22 yards out, and the Dutch midfielder unleashed a right drive that arrowed into the top-right corner past Filip Jorgensen.

As the balance shifted toward the Blues, they seized a free-kick to level the score in the 35th minute. Cody Gakpo’s foul on Wesley Fofana gave Chelsea a free kick in a dangerous area. Enzo Fernández stepped up and curled a right-footed effort low around the wall and into the bottom left corner, leaving Giorgi Mamardashvili rooted. Fofana reacted to the goal-bound shot, but missed getting a touch, and the goal was counted for Fernandez.

Securing a draw at Anfield restored the Blues to winning ways after losing their previous game to Nottingham Forest. They have been winless in six previous Premier League games, losing all the previous fixtures before securing a point at Anfield.  Meanwhile, Liverpool's position in the top four is slim as they are fourth with a point ahead of the nearest rivals, Aston Villa.

Overview

Chelsea took the game to Anfield, relentless and determined to get something out of the game. Chelsea threw everything at the Reds' defense and barely came close to snatching the victory. Liverpool dictated the tempo through Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones for the first 15 minutes. The tempo was gradually slowed as Chelsea took the spot, and the Reds missed a chance to double the lead.

Generally, the game was split between both sides. However, Liverpool had the better chance of winning despite the pressure on their defense. Chelsea wasted a glaring one-on-one chance on the counter, which should have been their opening goal.

Team Efficiency

Liverpool's early lead did not deter the Blues. They kept their composure, moving through the midfield as the Reds relied on counterattacks and set pieces to break their resolve. Virgil van Dijk played a significant role with near misses that put Chelsea on alert.

Chelsea soon took possession from midfield, forcing the Reds on the back foot. Despite moving into scoring ranges many times, the Blues' goal attempts did not match their efforts. Enzo and Palmer played a crucial role in that, charging the attackers deep into the Reds'half.

Chances and Assists.

Set pieces played a significant role in the game. Virgil van Dijk missed a glaring chance to put the Reds in a comfortable lead. Fofana kept him onside, in an attempt to keep him off. However, the defender had all the space to convert the chance.

Joao Pedro posed a danger to the Reds, advancing into scoring spaces to connect with the ball inside the box, despite being closely marked by Virgil van Dijk and Gravenberch. Another moment ror Chelsea was Mamardashvili's save of Enzo Fernandez's shot from a close range.
