Aston Villa Best Forest To Reach Historic UEFA Europa League Final
Aston Villa have qualified for the UEFA Europa League final after defeating Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the second leg of the semifinal, securing an aggregate score of 4-1.
Forest came into the match with a goal advantage from the first leg but were unable to hold on to the lead at Villa Park. They were humiliated in a second thriller as John McGinn scored a brace to lead the side through.
Ollie Watkin kicked off the goal campaign in the first half. The striker reacted quickly to Emi Buendia's cross from the left flank, tapping in the ball from inside the six-yard box. The game reached a pivotal moment in 57 minutes when Villa doubled their lead.
Nikola Milenkovic’s pull on Pau Torres inside the box was initially missed by the referee, but after a VAR review, the official pointed to the spot. Emiliano Buendia stepped up and sent Ortega the wrong way with a composed right-footed penalty, doubling Villa’s lead and shifting momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour.
After Watkins had made an attempt to set McGinn off for a strike, another crucial moment arose, and this time, it wa Morgan Rogers. The forward played McGinn in, and the captain curled a left-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 3-0. In a similar situation, in injury time, McGinn found another advantage from a scoring range and made the most of the opportunity. Rogers slipped a pass to the attacking midfielder, who curled a left-footed shot into the right corner to make it a fourth.
The final will be Aston Villa's first major European final since their last in 1982. They will face Freiburg in the final at Tupras Stadium on 20 May, 2026.
Overview
In the end, Villa’s composure in the final third made the difference. Forest had 49% possession and battled hard, with Elliot Anderson and Nikola Milenkovic putting in strong shifts, but they lacked a cutting edge in the box. Igor Jesus found the game a difficult one to impact, even though Hutchinson did good runnings down his wing. Villa, meanwhile, showed why they’re one of the Premier League’s most balanced sides this season, clinical when it mattered, disciplined at the back, and relentless in the closing stages.
Team Efficiency
It was a disastrous performance for Forest, losing to Villa in a comeback. They barely seemed to be offensive enough to challenge Villa's aggression. Omari Hutchinson made an effort in the early stages, but they gradually cooled off as Villa stepped up their game.
Watkins was a standout for much of the first half before the dynamics switched to McGinns. Rogers played a great role at opening up Forest from the left, which paid off with the opener. However, Forest were fatigued midway through the second half. The defense was loosed, and Villa took the advantage.
Chances and Assists
McGinns could not have done better with the goals. The build-ups to his goals were brilliantly orchestrated, leaving Forest's defense vulnerable. Buendia was another great influence. Villa dominated the game by a fair percentage.
