Aston Villa Are Champions Of 2025/26 UEFA Europa League
Aston Villa are the champions of the UEFA Europa League, and their first major European title in 44 years, following a 3-0 win against Freiburg in Istanbul on Thursday.
The two teams had never met in a European competition, while Aston Villa lifted its first trophy in a major tournament since 1996, when they defeated Leeds United in the League Cup. Just as the Premier League side, the German side was making its maiden appearance in a European final. The Germans quickly came under a strong onslaught from the English team, who proceeded to thrash them heavily.
Morgan Rogers kicked off the search for victory, forcing a save from Noah Atubolu following a fast break. Eventually, Villa snapped the deadlock late into the first half as Youri Tielemans struck home a cross from Rogers.
In the added minutes before halftime, Emiliano Buendia delivered a spectacular strike, cushioning Villa's lead. McGinns slipped a pass to the winger on the edge of the box, and he curled a sensational left-footed shot into the right corner. Shortly after halftime break, Rogers followed with a winning goal. Buendia slipped a cutback into the six-yard box, and unmarked Rogers reacted swiftly to tap in the ball from close range.
With the UEFA Europa League trophy in hand, Villa have secured their place in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League. Presently, they are fourth in the domestic league with 62 points.
