Wood’s Penalty Sets Forest On Course To Beat Aston Villa In UEL Semifinal First-Leg
Nottingham Forest claimed a good start to the UEFA Europa League semifinal clash, beating Aston Villa in the first leg, as Chris Wood’s 71st-minute penalty proved enough for a 1-0 victory.
It was a crucial match for both Forest and Villa, who reached their second major European event final in the 2023/24 UEFA European Conference League, after defeating Olympiakos in the semis. Meanwhile, Forest have been waiting for that Nikestone since their last in the 1979/80 season. Eventually, a penalty decided the fate of the first leg after a handball offense.
The decisive moment arrived at 67 minutes, when Lucas Digne, stretching to block Omar Hutchinson's cross, handled the ball in the area. The referee awarded a penalty for the offense, and Wood stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
Forest had chances to put the game to bed. Hutchinson forced Martínez into a flying save on 83 minutes, and Neco Williams’ header was clawed away on 89. But the real drama was reserved for stoppage time. Five minutes were signaled, and Villa threw bodies forward. In the 95th, Sancho cut inside and made a goal attempt, only for Ortega to produce the save of the match, parrying firmly to his right.
Overview
From the first whistle, Forest set the tone. Steve Cooper’s side pressed with intent, and inside three minutes, Igor Jesus had already seen a shot blocked after Omari Hutchinson’s probing cross. Villa, for their part, looked to punch through on the break. Morgan Rogers twice tested the waters, his second-minute effort blocked before Youri Tielemans stung Stefan Ortega’s gloves from range on nine minutes.
Forest engaged their opponents meticulously. Villa posed danger, and Forest knew that. They held their ground until they scored the crucial goal and avoided needless errors that would allow a Villa comeback.
Team Efficiency
Forest stood the better chance of taking the lead in the first half, even though they did not. Emiliano Martinez made a couple of great saves in the period to keep the deadlock. Forest pressed deep into Villa's half, using the wings to penetrate. Omar Hutchinson and Anderson were standouts in this period.
Tayo Aina played well on defense, despite being replaced in the second half. Forest maintained composure after Unai Emery reinforced the team, bringing in Jadon Sancho. Forest's defense was firm regardless, allowing Neco Williams to overlap, giving the frontline a boost.
Chances and Assists
For Aston Villa, it was a disappointing night. They had 12 shots to Forest’s 14, won the corner count 7-6, and created the clearer openings before the penalty. Rogers was lively, Watkins worked tirelessly, and Martínez kept them in it. But Digne’s handball, Tielemans’ wayward finishing, and a failure to convert late pressure mean their Champions League chase takes a hit.
