Southamption Proved Competence Against Arsenal In FA Cup Elimination
After a succession of wins over Doncaster, Leicester, and most recently, Premier League Fulham, Southampton continued in their winning streak with a 2-1 defeat of Arsenal and booked their place in the FA Cup semi-final.
After a painful defeat in the Carabao Cup final, Arsenal were trying to end their six-year trophy drought as they travelled to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Still, they were unsuccessful, despite playing against a team from the second division.
Arsenal's inability to score goals persisted, despite the international break. The Gunners had plenty of chances in the first half to put the game to bed. Southampton's best chance came in the early minutes of the first half, but Cristhian Mosquera saved the moment.
The Saints led from the first half, with Ross Stewart's effort from inside the box, and even when Arsenal equalised with a Viktor Gyokeres tap-in, the Saints responded on the counter, with Shea Charles curling the ball into the right corner.
It was evident that Arsenal were rusty and untidy on the offensive. However, they are in a vantage position to claim the Premier League silverware for the first time since 2003.
