Chelsea Beat Leeds United To Reach FA Cup Final

Chelsea held on to a narrow lead to edge Leeds United and progress to the Emirates FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The Blues had just dismissed their former manager, Liam Rosenoir, over the team's performance. Chelsea lost their previous game to Brighton, leading to Liam's dismissal as the team dropped out of the  Premier League top six.

It was a difficult and rarely comfortable game, but Chelsea will not care. On an afternoon that stretched beyond 100 minutes and threatened to boil over, Enzo Fernandez’s 23rd-minute header was enough to see off a stubborn Leeds United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. This result keeps the Blues’ momentum ticking while leaving Daniel Farke’s side to rue their wastefulness.

Chelsea almost doubled their lead moments later when Joao Pedro spun Enzo’s through ball onto the left post, a let off Leeds survived. But for all their possession, the Blues were rarely allowed to settle. Fouls punctuated the rhythm. Moises Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Marc Cucurella all penalized while Leeds grew throughout.

Chelsea will progress to the final to meet Manchester City, who have just won the Carabao EFL Cup. The final will be held at Wembley Stadium on May 16.

Overview

However, the FA Cup semi-final witnessed a different team, driven by the will to undo their past. Leeds proved difficult, but the Blues lived up to the task. Leeds' dangerous striker,  Calvert-Lewin, had few chances and was closely marked in the box. Calceido held the midfield firmly and occasionally dropped behind to assist the defense, particularly the right back.

Team Effectiveness

Though Leeds came out strong after the deficit, they faced a brick wall in Chelsea's defense and in the midfield. Calceido and Andrey Santos played a significant role in the midfield. Chelsea barely advanced into the opponents' box in the second half, and Leeds were unable to break their resolve. Roberts Sanchez held firm in the box, making brilliant saves when Leeds got shots on target.
