Arsenal Reclaim Premier League Summit After Newcastle Defeat
Arsenal regained the Premier League top spot with a sensational strike from Eberechi Eze, beating Newcastle United 1-0 at Emirates Stadium.
Last weekend, the Gunners had a nightmare at Etihad Stadium, losing 2-1, dropping them one place behind their rivals in the Premier League standings after Manchester City defeated Burnley in their midweek game. The loss put Arsenal in a predicament until Eberechi Eze did his thing.
The attacking midfielder received a pass from Kai Havertz in front of the box and curled the ball into the right post. Earlier, Newcastle had a close shave with the goal when Joe Willock missed a hit inside the six-yard box.
The victory set Arsenal on top of the Premier League table with three points clear of Manchester City. The Citizens will meet Everton in their next game.
Overview
Arsenal were fortunate to have made away with the victory, considering the opportunities Newcastle had. Willock lost the best chance to set the Magpies ahead. However, he was challenged by Saliba, who disrupted his concentration on getting a good touch on the ball. David Raya was inspirational to the team, making necessary saves to keep the lead alive and avoiding needless errors.
Team Effectiveness
Attacking-wise, Newcastle were sharper than the Gunners. It is understandable Arsenal were under pressure and had more to close than Newcastle. Notwithstanding, Newcastle had a better attacking approach to the game.
Credit to Eze for the strike. It was just enough for the day. Viktor Gyokeres brought courage to the team, but was blocked by Nick Pope on his best chance in a fast break. Arsenal's defense maintained composure, despite the pressure. David Raya played a more significant role, keeping the box.
