Arsenal, Atletico Madrid Share Spoils In UCL Semifinal First-Leg Clash

Arsenal held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Champions League semifinal clash, giving them a level-headed outlook to the second-leg tie at Emirates Stadium.

It was split between the sides, with both being cautious and making the most of their chances. Arsenal could not afford a loss, considering their domestic league title race, which has been tight between them and Manchester City. They reached their first UEFA Champions League final in 2005/06 and have not won the trophy.

The game was decided by two penalties, which were awarded in both halves. Arsenal could have had a second penalty, but the referee later canceled his previous decision. Viktor Gyokere converted the spot-kick for Arsenal, and Julian Alvarez converted his for Atletico to level the terms in the 56th minute.

Atletico could not afford a loss either. They have not reached the UEFA Champions League final since 2016, when they lost to their domestic league rivals, Real Madrid.

Overview

Atletico put Arsenal to work but were unable to keep up the pressure on the Gunners. Arsenal played impressively well before establishing control.  The Gunners were cohesive, working together to keep their opponents out of their half. It was an Arsenal team unlike previous games.

Griezmann came closest to putting the hosts in the lead when his shot clipped the top corner of the frame. Ademola Lookman attempted a shot inside the box, unchallenged, but sent the ball in flight over the bar. Mikel Arteta's substitutions after Alvarez's penalty revamped the team, giving the Gunners the control needed to hold off the Spaniards.

Team Efficiency

Arsenal played it safe for most of the early stages. They slowed down the pace to avoid being caught off guard on the counter by Atletico. They maintained a good composure in the midfield to seize possession and charge into scoring range. However, Atletico kept firm in the defense.

Atletico's attackers could not find the pace they needed to cause scares. Arsenal kept close mark on both Antoine Griezmann and Ademola Lookman, weathering down the Spaniard's pace. Julian Alvarez tried to be a standout in the first half, but was closely marked. Though he had his moment of a shot on target. It could have been more precarious for Arsenal had the Spaniards had the pace they needed through Lookman and Griezmann.

Chances and Assists

Eze brought vibrance to the midfield. Arsenal kept the ball a little longer, holding off Atletico's advancements. The Gunners' defense maintained good composure despite the cores being leveled. Avoiding conceding was difficult as the hosts' attackers became increasingly dangerous.

Bringing in Bukayo Saka was timely and impactful. Atletico became mindful of the danger of the winger charging down the right and making dangerous assists.   He made the most effective assist upon his substitution, which could have resulted in a penalty. Martin Zubimendi was prominent throughout.
