Alvarez, Sorloth's Strikes Seal Atletico's Victory Over Barcelona In UCL Quarter-final First-leg Tie

Atletico Madrid secured a convincing 2-0 win over Barcelona at the Nou Camp stadium, following a first-half goal from Julián Alvarez and a second-half strike from Alexander Sorloth.

Barcelona dominated the game from the start, with Marcus Rashford having the first real opportunity, but his effort was saved by Juan Musso. Atletico Madrid responded with a Julián Alvarez shot that Joan García parried.

The visiting side turned the game around in the 44th minute when Pau Cubarsí was shown a straight red card, leaving Barcelona with 10 men. Alvarez capitalized on the numerical advantage, scoring from a free kick just before halftime.

Atletico Madrid continued to push, and they doubled their lead in the 70th minute through Sorloth's well-taken goal. Barcelona's best chance came late on, but Dani Olmo's effort sailed over the bar. Atletico Madrid held on to secure a comfortable win.

The first-leg tie victory was Atletico Madrid's first away defeat of Barcelona at Nou Camp Stadium since 2024, when they defeated Barcelona 2-1 in the domestic league fixture. However, they lost their previous game against Barcelona, leading to their elimination from the Copa del Rey.

Overview

Barcelona kept the pressure on Atletico through the right wing, and Lamine Yamal did well at that, connecting with Marcus Rashford to barrel into the box. Atletico's game plan seemed to allow the pressure for much of the first half by being defensive.

Despite the pressure, Atletico did well avoiding needless penalties as Barcelona repeatedly burrowed into the box. They intended to capitalize on the counter to catch their hosts unaware, but Barcelona's midfield maintained a strong stance. Atletico were able to sap Barcelona of energy, and Pau Cubarsi's tackle on Giuliano Simeone on a counter set the game in a different direction as Barcelona went one man down.

With Barcelona playing one man down, the second half was a little relaxed for Atletico. That, however, did not make a difference. The substitutions did. The attacking frontline was revamped with Alexander Sorloth replacing Ademola Lookman, giving the centre forward a sharper outlook, and Sorloth scored 10 minutes later.
