Ademola Lookman's Goal Lead Atletico Madrid to Eliminate Barcelona From UEFA Champions League

Despite Barcelona producing a composed and resilient performance to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the second-leg tie of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final, they are out of the competition on an aggregate score of 3-2.

Atletico won their previous clash with Barcelona at Nou Camp by 2-0, which was equalised halfway through the match before Ademola Lookman set the hosts on the path to victory. Barcelona's chance to fight back was ruined when Eric Garcia was red-carded for his tackle on Alexander Sorloth.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring with a precise left-footed strike from outside the box, finishing off a slick attacking move to stun the home crowd early.

The Catalans continued to press with intent and doubled their advantage in the 24th minute. Ferran Torres latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Dani Olmo before calmly firing into the top corner, putting Barcelona firmly in control.

Atletico, however, responded with determination. After weathering early pressure, they found a way back into the contest in the 31st minute when Ademola Lookman finished clinically from close range following a well-worked move involving Marcos Llorente.

Losing the match further extended Barcelona's UEFA Champions League title drought, which has lasted for eleven years. Also, Barcelona had not reached the UEFA Champions League since 2019.

Overview

It was just a matter of time for Barcelona to take a comfortable lead after Yamal's goal. The pressure was steady on Atletico, and Barcelona had seized the centre defense as a point of access. The pressure eventually yielded; however, the hosts were not relenting. Lookman had previously signalled a threat when he assisted Griezmann with an effort that was blocked before he found space on the counter.

Atletico built resilient, but Barcelona were just unlucky to have Torres' goal in the second half ruled out. Though the referee's decision was correct. The striker had strayed into an offside position before the ball was deflected to his path. Diego Simeone's substitution with Sorloth did play a role in the victory.
