What Chance Do Arsenal, Manchester City Stand Lifting Premier League Silverware
West Ham shares spoils with Manchester City as they fight for their survival in the Premier League, being in the bottom three. Conversely, that spelled a setback for Manchester City's Premier League title race. What chances are there for the Titans fighting for the silverware and West Ham, the bottom dwellers?
It was a busy weekend for top teams; Arsenal and Manchester City were not exempt. The gap between these teams was marginal. Someone had to lose, and who would dare to win? Neither could West Ham afford a defeat. Arsenal blasted through a narrow glimpse of hope to crush Everton and took the maximum points to extend its lead at the top of the table.
Meanwhile, West Ham ended the last matchday in the relegation zone. They boosted their chances of survival, defeating Fulham 1-0. That kept them within striking distance of Nottingham Forest and Tottenham above them. Avoiding defeat here, move them out of the drop zone, at least until the others finish their games. They had only lost one of their last five Premier League matches and had won just two.
The Hammers have found their form at a critical time. That’s been reflected at the London Stadium, in the manner they responded to City taking the lead from Bernando Silva's lob over Mads Hermansen into the top left post. They restored level term four minutes later with Konstantinos Mavropanos' header, following a corner.
Earlier in the week, Manchester City had an unprofitable trip to Bernabeu Stadium, where Real Madrid ran riot, thrashing them by 3-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League. Having to draw against West Ham further extended the gap between them and Arsenal by nine.
Meanwhile, Arsenal won their match against Everton. However, it took a late effort to break Everton's resolve. After Viktor Gyokeres scored the first goal in the closing minutes, Max Dowman scored the winning goal in injury time, making him the youngest player to score in a Premier League game.
With seven games remaining for Arsenal and eight for Manchester City, Arsenal stand a better chance of lifting the silverware than City do. Bear in mind that Manchester City will be hosted at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea and at the Emirates Stadium by Arsenal.
