Real Madrid Advance To UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals As Manchester City Are Out

Manchester City are out of the UEFA Champions League after losing the two-legged Round of 16 ties to Real Madrid, who advanced to the quarter-finals on an aggregate score of 5-1.

After a disappointing first-leg tie at Bernabeu, Manchester City lost the return fixture at Etihad Stadium by 2-1, Vincius Jr. scoring a brace to secure the back-to-back victory for the Spaniards. Real Madrid have not failed to pass the Round of 16 since 1962/63.

Vinicius converted a penalty drawn from Bernando Silva's handball inside the six-yard box, leading to the midfielder being dismissed from the match. City responded by restoring level terms as Erling Haaland side-footed home Jetemy Doku's cross.

As the game progressed into injury time, Vinicius sealed the victory, scoring from close range. Real Madrid pressed deep into City's half, and Tchouameni delivered a cross into the box for Vinicius, who was unmarked to finish.

However, Pep Guardiola had admitted ahead of the match that his chances are slim, and he has not guided a side to overturn a first-leg deficit in the UCL to progress since 2014/15. Real Madrid will now progress to the quarter-finals as Manchester City return to the Premier League.
