Newcastle Edge Chelsea At Stamford Bridge
Chelsea hosted Newcastle to a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, setting back from regaining a place in the top four of the Premier League.
Newcastle regained its winning way after two previous winless games in other competitions. They drew against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League after their FA Cup in a 3-1 loss to Manchester City.
Chelsea started brightly but failed to capitalize on their chances. The Blues enjoyed 58% possession and troubled the Newcastle goal with shots, but Aaron Ramsdale was equal to their early pressure. As the half wore on, the Magpies began to find their feet, and a sublime pass from Joe Willock set up Anthony Gordon's opening goal in the 18th minute.
The England forward expertly guided the ball to beat Robert Sanchez to the bottom left corner, giving the Magpies the lead. The goal quickly shifted momentum in Newcastle's favor, and they continued to threaten on the counterattack.
Chelsea became physical for the remainder of the half, leaving the front line to struggle with unlocking their opponents' resolute defense. Neither Cole Palmer nor Joao Pedero could find scoring chances.
Chelsea made some strategic changes in the second half, but struggled to create clear chances. Newcastle's Aaron Ramsdale made a string of impressive saves, and as the game entered injury time, Chelsea threw everything forward, but Newcastle held firm to secure a memorable win.
