F1 New Rules and Drivers' Challenges

As the new season unfolds, the new F1 rules are taking effect on the teams as they modify their car designs and engines to comply. The cars are shorter and more aerodynamic. However, that has been a setback, and perhaps for some, an improvement.

Until now, F1 cars have not relied solely on an energy source. That has changed in line with the Net Zero target. The new rules are targeted towards fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. On that basis, the mechanism was designed to achieve the goal. Unlike before, drivers will now rely more on energy conservation than engine advantages.

This is where the MGU-K comes in. The previous system used was MGU-H, which has now been discontinued to pave the way for a more energy and fuel-efficient system.

The batteries require charging to a full capacity by converting heat energy to electrical energy. Hence, the removal of the MGU-H mechanism.

What is MGU-K?

The acronym means Motor Generator Unit - Kinetics. It is the new mechanism deployed to convert heat generated by the engines to electrical energy. In this sense, the heat generated by the engine charges the battery on which the engine's performance now depends.

Heat dissipation occurs during braking at the turns and corners. Effectively, in these instances, drivers' batteries are charged optimally. This energy is now dispensed on the down straight or DRS. Now, the technicality is, to gain pace on the down straight, you need your battery charged optimally. The new rules discontinued the deployment of MGU-H.

What is MGU-H?

The acronym MGU-H means Motor Generator Unit - Heat. It is the mechanism that helps with heat dissipation.

Here is the kicker. Until now, engine quality determines who overtakes on DRS and in the corners. That is no more. It now depends on who has the best battery quality at this instance. Therefore, a driver's sense of judgment on his energy conservation now comes into play more than his reliance on the engineering.

At the Australian Grand Prix, drivers struggled with this adjustment, and Max Verstappen was barely able to compete in the race. The same reason was McLaren's DNS before even getting into the grid lanes at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. With the new rules, winning races leading up to the F1 Championship is different from before.

By the way, the season has been a productive one for Mercedes and Ferrari. For someone like Lewis Hamilton, it has been an impressive time. He made his first podium appearance for Ferrari since joining the team last season at the Chinese Grand Prix. Mercedes peers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, have been dominating on the grid, winning a race apiece this season in one-two podium finishes for the team at the Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese Grand Prix.
