Chinese Grand Prix: George Russell Wins Spring Race In Intriguing Showdown With Ferrari
George Russell claimed the season season opening Sprint Race in Shanghai for Mercedes, following an intriguing showdown with the Ferraris, who finished in second and third position, respectively.
It appears that the Mercedes team has a lot up their sleeves. Apparently, they have got a lot more to come as Russell continues to establish his dominance on the track. Ferrari has shown improvements on the grid. Meanwhile, unlike the last edition, McLaren and Red Bull's performance continues to trail.
Lewis Hamilton was in another dimension as he battled George Russell for the Chinese Grand Prix pole, as the Ferrari duo kept their trail on the Mercedes driver from start to finish.
Russell stood firm as the pole repeatedly interchanged between him and Hamilton. The inside lane repeatedly served Hamilton right until Russell gained traction to lead by a wider margin, leaving the two Ferraris to battle for P2. Charles Leclerc did, and Hamilton dropped to second.
For McLaten, pitting did not serve them right as virtual safety was deployed following Esteban Ocon's accident. Kimi Antonelli also suffered a setback for causing a collision with Isack Hadjar on Lap 1. The Mercedes driver was served a 10-second penalty, which he served in the pit lane.
Eventually, Norris improved from behind to finish behind Hamilton while Antonelli followed in P5. Former F1 champion Max Verstappen had a difficult Sprint race. Both Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, who were making a Sprint debut for Callidac, finished outside of the top 10.
