Barcelona Thrash Newcastle To Advance To UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals

Barcelona have eliminated Newcastle United from the UEFA Champions League, winning both legs of the Round of 16 and advancing to the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 8-2.

Newcastle lost massively by 7-2 in the second-leg tie at Nou Camp with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski scoring braces. Meanwhile, Newcastle drew 1-1 in the previous tie. The Spaniards were unmatched on their turf and neatly thrashed the Premier League side by an incredible margin.

Anthony Elanga scored Newcastle's two goals, moments after Raphinha and Marc Bernal scored to put Barcelona in the lead. The scoreline stayed even until the added minutes, when Lamine Yamal converted a penalty to give Barcelona the lead before the halftime break.

Newcastle's game plan began to fall apart quite early into the second half when Raphinha's through pass broke through the defense to meet Fermin Lopez, who guided the ball into the left corner. Lewandowski extended ded the lead with the fifth goal, nodding home Raphinha's corner.

The Polish found another breakthrough when Yamal set him off with a through ball. He darted past the defense and finished off the ball. Raphinha sealed it up with the seventh midway through the second.

Newcastle was decisively beaten. The Spaniards were unquestionably spectacular. The Magpies were no match for them. Barcelona have now secured their place in the quarter-finals as Newcastle are out.

Overview

Raphinha and Lewandowski had a field day, thrashing Newcastle. Barcelona seized the weak defense line of the Magpies, barreling shots into every side of the post. Initially, Newcastle proved to be up to the task, but that only lasted through the first period of the game. Barcelona quickly changed its approach, and the Magpies fell apart.

Earlier, Lewandowski was trying to find his place in the game, but as they kept the pressure on, Newcastle's stiffness loosened, and more passes got to him. The Polish striker wasted no time with his chance, establishing his presence in the game. Elanga was prominent for Newcastle just like he was in the previous tie. However, his efforts were not enough to hold the Spabiards back. Perhaps Newcastle should have bolstered the team with fresh legs earlier in the second period.
