Atlético Madrid Eclipse Tottenham In Rioting UCL R16 First-leg tie
Atletico Madrid ran riot against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League R16, securing a 5-2 victory in the first-leg tie with Julian Alvarez scoring a brace.
It was the first time since 1962/63 that Tottenham and Atletico would meet in a European competition. It was payback time for the Spaniards from Spurs, to whom they lost 5-1 in the Cup Winners’ Cup final. It has been since 2021/22 when Atletico last won a game against a Premier League side in a European competition.
Tottenham, who are battling relegation in their domestic league, stood no chance against the hosts. The start was disastrous, coupled with a goalkeeper error, allowing Marcos Llorente to score the opening goal. Antoine Griezmann's goal was another flop, leading to a break that doubled the lead. While that should be it, Antonín Kinsky did it again. The goalkeeper missed clearing a back pass against on-rushing Julian Alvarez, who made away with the loose ball and finished it off for the third goal.
It was a terrific first-leg tie for the Spurs, and Atletico did not have to do a lot of work to find goals, leading by three to nil within 15 minutes. Kinky was making his Champions League debut with Tottenham, and it was not a plausible performance.
Robin Le Normand's header following a corner made it a fourth goal as the first half continued to unfold. However, Tortenham managed to pull one back through Pedro Porro.
It could be said that Tottenham only had a consolation goal. The first half was devoid of the characteristics of a side determined to win. The coordination was flawed, and the goalkeeper was wobbly. Meanwhile, the Spaniards were as sharp as a shard. Ademola Lookman left no room to chance, giving the assist leading up to the opening goal, and Griezmann made the most of Kinky's error for his 14th Champions League goal. Tottenham really had a difficult day.
The game came to a close with two more goals in the second half, with Atletico's fifth from Julian Alvarez and the Spurs' second from Dominic Solanke. Tottenham's flaws were exposed, allowing Atletico to run riot. It was no less than a walkover for the Spaniards.
Entering this game in terrible form, Tottenham, who are once again experiencing vastly different fortunes domestically and continentally, are now just one point above the Premier League relegation zone. Atlético Madrid are into the UCL Round of 16 for the seventh time since 2018/19 and have progressed from this stage in three of their six previous attempts, including two of the three previous attempts against English opposition during that period.
