Tottenham Remain Winless, Lost To Manchester United At Old Trafford
Manchester United cruised to a convincing 2-0 win over ten-man Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, courtesy of Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandez's efforts.
Michael Carrick remained unbeaten since his appointment as United's interim manager. He was appointed to replace former manager, Ruben Amorim, the day after the team was eliminated from the Carabao EFL Cup by Brighton. United won their previous three Premier League games under the English manager, occupying the top-four of the table with 44 points.
Today's game got off to a frenetic start, with chances flying in for both teams. Mbeumo's left-footed effort went wide, but United's pressure paid off in the 38th minute. Kobbie Mainoo's corner was met by Mbeumo's left foot, and the ball nestled in the bottom corner, sending the home side to a 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, Tottenham's hopes were dealt a significant blow, when Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless challenge on Casemiro. The Uruguayan's dismissal sparked a heated confrontation, but United failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage before the break.
As United maintained dominance in the second half, Bruno Fernandes found the scoring chance for the second goal. The Portuguese forward was unmarked inside the box and tapped home a flicker from Diogo Dialot's header, following a sublime cross from the right wing.
United sealed the victory as their fourth consecutive Premier League game win and their third at Old Trafford since Carrick's appointment. Meanwhile, the Spurs have remained winless in seven consecutive Premier League games.
Overview
Manchester United's opening goal was well crafted from a set piece. Tottenham did not understand what they were up to and that rendered them vulnerable. The first half should have been more difficult for the Spurs, but Gluglielmo Vacario saved the moment, when Amad advanced into the box, blocking the striker from getting past him to score.
Romero's red card was a huge setback for the Spurs in the second half. They barely could get a shot while United sustained the pressure on them. It was a matter of time for the hosts to score the second goal and Fernandez did that brilliantly well.
