Fenerbahçe Take Exit Door As Nottingham Forest Quality For UEL Round of 16
Nottingham Forest outclassed Fenerbahçe on aggregate scores at City Ground, despite losing 2-1 to the Turkiye side in the second-leg playoff of the UEFA Europa League.
Forest commanded a 3-0 winner in the first-leg tie, securing them by one foot in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League (UEL). Fenerbahçe came out with an incredible form to bounce back at Forest, but victory in the first leg served as the perfect way for Vítor Pereira to start his tenure as Nottingham Forest boss.
Though, Forest are looking to secure a third successive major European victory for the first time since 1983/84, and they had maintained clean sheets in their last three UEL games at the City Ground. Unfortunately, they could not achieve that as Fenerbahçe had led by two goals before they scored.
Fenerbahçe took the lead from Akturkoglu scoring the opening goal in the 22nd minute, and doubled the lead shortly after halftime break, converting a penalty drawn by Forest. Midway through the second half, Callum Hudson-Odoi pulled one goal back for Forest.
Fenerbahçe’s chances of an incredible comeback after such deficits appear fanciful given that they have won just one of ten European away matches against English clubs. They have now been eliminated while Forest will progress to the UEFA Europa League Last 16.
