Cole Palmer Scores Hat-trick As Chelsea Thrash Wolves
Cole Palmer bagged a hat-trick as Chelsea claimed a decisive 3-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as the latter remained at the bottom end of the Premier League table.
Coming out of the relegation zone continued to be a struggle for Wolves. They have remained winless in their previous five consecutive Premier League games, which dropped them to 20th position with 8 points.
Palmer converted a penalty drawn from a foul tackle on Joao Pedro on the edge of the box. Midway through the first half, Pedro was pushed inside the 18-yard box, drawing a penalty for Palmer to convert, and Chelsea led by 2-0.
Three minutes later, the attacker completed the hat-trick. Marc Cucurella cut back a pass into the centre of the box, and on-rushing Palmer arrived timely to steer the ball into the net. Wolves pulled one goal back in the second half from Tolu Arokodare's effort, but the Blues kept the lead to win.
Chelsea extended their winning streak to four consecutive Premier League games and consolidated their position in 5th with 43 points. However, earlier in the week, they were eliminated from the Carabao EFL Cup by Arsenal.
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior becomes just the second English manager to win his first five games in the competition. The Blues’ form has been in top form since Rosenior’s appointment, helping the side to reignite hopes of a top-four finish.
Overview
Wolves were a little erratic in conceding those penalties. The spot-kicks were avoidable, but frustration kicked in, and Wolves were not careful enough. Conversely, Chelsea left no stone unturned, scoring the needed goals to lead from the first half.
Matheus Mane proved to be impressive throughout and missed the goal when his effort clipped the frame. Yerson Mosquera was to blame for the second spot-kick. His tackle on Pedro was needless and could have earned him a red card. However, the referee was considerate and awarded a second penalty to the Blues, instead.
