Mancheater United Claim Clean Victory, Outshine Manchester City In Derby At Old Trafford
Manchester City had a difficult derby at Old Trafford, losing 2-0 to Manchester United on Michael Carrick's first game as the club's interim manager, following the exit of former head coach, Ruben Amorim.
Pep Guardiola could not secure a back-to-back victory against United, on the team's trip Old Trafford for the second leg of their derby this season. In the previous Premier League game at Etihad in September, City thrashed United 3-0. Unfortunately, in this game, they were humiliated by United, with a dominant performance.
The first half was a tense affair, with both teams creating chances but failing to convert. United's Kobbie Mainoo had a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead, but Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a stunning save to keep the scores level. City's Jérémy Doku also had a chance to score, but his effort was blocked.
As the game wore on, United began to take control, with Mbeumo scoring the opener in the 65th minute. The goal was a result of fine teamwork, with Bruno Fernandes picking out Mbeumo with a perfect pass. Mbeumo's left-foot shot found the bottom corner, giving United the lead.
City pushed for an equalizer, but United's defense held firm. In the 76th minute, Dorgu added a second goal for United, tapping home a cross from Matheus Cunha. The goal sealed the win for United, who closed out the game with ease.
The loss set Manchester City back with three points, giving the Premier League table leaders, Arsenal the chance to extend the margin. Manchester United improved to fifth position with 35 points.; the highest position they reached since last season.
Overview
Manchester United maintained an impressive composure against their next door neighbours, City, keeping a close tab on their strikers. Neither Sememyo nor Doku could effectively barrelled down the wings, and Haaland was closely marked. They had no shot on target through the first session.
Meanwhile, the hosts were dominant, having two goalscoring moments ruled out. In two similar situations, both Bruno Fernandez and Mbeumo were caught offside in fast breaks, which could have put United in the lead.
United did a thorough job, neatly thrashing City, who were inauspicious finding a scoring chance. The second half was worse off for the Citizens. United had the better of the session, dominating every side of the pitch. Within a minute of Mason Mount replacing Fernandez, he established his presence with a goal, that should have sealed the game, but it was ruled offside. It was such a challenging game for City.
