Liverpool Shrug Off Leeds United At Anfield
Liverpool narrowly escaped defeat to Leeds United at Anfield, following a goalless draw that saw the only deciding goal ruled out for offside.
The Reds have maintained an unbeaten run on New Year's Day since 2005. Meanwhile, Leeds nearly ended the 20-year unbeaten run, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Liverpool have won five of their last Premier League games on this day.
Leeds were hard-fighting and defensive opponents. It was a first half of shared spoils, tight enough to keep Hugo Ekitike at bay. The few chances the striker had were blocked. Leeds did a great job keeping the deadlock up till the interval.
Liverpool escaped the dagger from Leeds when Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the back of the net in the latter stages. Leeds should have taken the lead, but he drifted into offside in a contest for the ball with Virgil van Dijk before he dinked in Sebastiaan Bornnauw's back-heel pass.
Allison's clearance set up Ampadu for a tap-in from outside the box. Jeremie Frimgpong was a problem for Leeds, charging down the right, he assisted with a cross that Ekitike headed wide in front of the goal.
